THE AREA

"Southern Burgundy landscapes : Five distinct natural regions
France's Saône-&-Loire department, christened Southern Burgundy and deservedly so, is the southernmost of Burgundy's four administrative departments.

Wine and gastronomy, renowned hospitality and festive traditions all contribute to the expression of a lifestyle full of amenity and pleasures.

Joyful pastureland, dense forests, a horizon crafted by vineyards, the rugged Morvan mountains and gentler hillsides, rushing rivers and smooth-flowing water courses are placed amidst a setting of spectacular architectural heritage.

Five distinct natural regions, which create a sublime set of contrasts and sensations, compose this special territory.

Mâconnais-Clunisois

IN THE HEART OF A ROMANESQUE GARDEN

Here at Burgundy’s southern gate, scents from the Mediterranean make their way to these villages replete with typical winegrowers’homes flanked by porches and tucked away into the area’s highlyreputed vineyards. The most renowned local white wines are grown at the foot of the Solutré and Vergisson cliff faces, just up the road from the first Beaujolais slopes.

The Saône-&-Loire department boasts a Romanesque garden, in which the sector around Mâcon and Cluny is the feature exhibit. A multitude of bell towers dot the countryside in all directions. Two tremendous sites attest to the gifted architectural legacy of the area: Cluny, the beacon of Middle Age Christendom, and the Tournus abbey church.Memories of Lamartine,a favourite native son, can be found everywhere."
